Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that has no color, odor or taste. It’s heavier than air and enters buildings at a low level, usually through cracks in the foundation or walls. Its radioactivity makes radon a potential health hazard, which is the reason radon levels in buildings are regulated by the federal government. ARM Environmental Services offers a range of services related to the detection and reduction of radon, including inspections, surveys, the installation of detection equipment and radon mitigation systems.

Radon Detection

Radon can’t be detected through normal observation, although it can cause lung cancer due to its radioactivity. However, this process takes at least five years to develop, so physical symptoms are an impractical method of identifying high radon levels. ARM uses short-term detectors to measure current radon levels in your building. It also uses long-term detectors to measure fluctuations in radon levels over time.

Radon Treatment

Radon treatments may be classified into the following four general techniques:

  • Pressurization
  • Depressurization
  • Ventilation
  • Sump

Pressurization involves installing a positive pressure system in the building, which minimizes the radon entering the home. Depressurization techniques reduce the pressure on the soil under the foundation, typically by increasing air flow under the floor. Ventilation improvements to a building are generally designed to prevent the transportation of radon from the basement to the higher levels. The installation of a radon sump in the basement can also reduce the concentration of radon in the higher levels of a building. ARM radon remediation systems include all of these general techniques.

Meeting Radon Regulations

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a maximum level of 4.0 picocuries of radon per liter of air (pCi/L) for inhabited buildings. ARM radon specialists must remain up-to-date on radon requirements through regular training.

ARM has several accreditations related to radon inspection and abatement from South Carolina, including On-Call Environmental Contractor and Approved Environmental Consultant. We have been providing environmental services throughout the Southeastern United States since 1991, especially South Carolina and North Carolina. Call us today to learn more about the environmental services we can provide for you.

"Capitol Places, and our affiliated projects in surrounding states, have been using ARM Environmental for our evaluations and due diligence on Real Estate Development Projects for over 20 years now. The reason that we choose ARM is that they have consistently provided quality, cost effective services, with an emphasis on common sense solutions. Additionally when it takes the extra effort to dig into the research and really come up with innovative solutions, they also have the intellectual horsepower to do that. I can't even imagine not using ARM to help us in future projects. I would highly endorse them to anyone."
