Vapor intrusion is the migration of volatile chemicals from the subsurface soil and groundwater into the indoor air of overlying buildings. Common causes of vapor intrusion include organic chemicals from dry cleaners, leaks from underground fuel tanks and industrial degreasers. ARM Environmental Services has extensive qualifications for assessing many types of buildings for soil vapor intrusion.
Buildings can have poor air quality when they are located on or in the vicinity of property with contaminated soil or groundwater. These contaminants can undergo chemical reactions that produce various gases that can infiltrate a building from the soil beneath it. It’s for this reason that environmental regulators have recently begun to widen their focus from contaminated soil and groundwater to its possible effects on indoor air.
