Chemical vapors can migrate from contaminated soil into the air. These vapors may then become a health hazard when they accumulate inside enclosed spaces such as nearby buildings. The issue of vapor migration has caused environmental regulators to widen their focus in recent years to include indoor air quality (IAQ). ARM Environmental Services offers a wide range of IAQ services for commercial, industrial, governmental, and residential facilities.
ARM’s services for assessing IAQ primarily consist of collecting and testing samples from the air and building surfaces. They also include monitoring the exposure of building occupants to air pollutants and computer modeling of the air flow inside buildings.
ARM’s methods for improving IAQ may generally be classified into filtration, source control and ventilation, depending on the source of the contamination. Adding filters to the ventilation systems is most effective when the source of contaminants in the air is outside the building, especially pollen. Methods of source control are more common for contamination sources such as mold that are inside the building. Improving the ventilation can also reduce the level of contaminants in the air from internal sources.
